Beyond Symptoms: Understanding Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy
Many people seek help because they are feeling overwhelmed or are experiencing depression, anxiety or difficulties in relationships. While relieving these symptoms is important, many also want to understand why these patterns keep recurring.
Psychoanalytical psychotherapy is a form of treatment that explores the deeper emotional processes that shape how we think, feel and relate to others. Rather than focusing solely on symptom relief, it seeks to understand the underlying experiences and unconscious patterns that may contribute to ongoing psychological distress.
Therapy offers a safe, confidential and collaborative space to reflect on these experiences. As insight develops, many people find they are better able to understand themselves, improve their relationships and make more enduring changes in their lives.
As a psychiatrist, I combine comprehensive psychiatric assessment and medication management with a psychotherapeutic approach. The treatment is always tailored to the individual and aims to promote both symptom relief and lasting psychological growth.
I am currently a candidate with the Queensland Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association (QPPA). This work is provided within the framework of that training and supported by ongoing professional supervision, while drawing on more than 27 years of experience as a practising psychiatrist.
